“Contrasts” and “Flow” are the key for “Strategy”

30 Jan

We talk so much about the things we like to do. Some people call the inclination towards what we like to do as a “calling” while others like Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi call it “Flow”. At a subconscious level though, does it all mean a play of contrasts?

I was lucky to have a chance to experience what it means to see such contrasts. During my visit to India in 2013, I could not help but notice the disparity in income, color, language, culture and thought process of every individual.Despite the existence of these differences, there also seemed an unspoken need for the opposites to exist. It was evident that rich cannot exist without the poor and darker colored people would not be considered a minority or majority without the existence of fair colored people.

As I began to compare these scenarios with the familiar settings I came from, they all seemed to overlap. Contrast adds color to our lives. They are the driving forces we all need to live our lives with a purpose and to be able to accomplish our pre-destined path by navigating through the complex rigmarole of people, circumstances and emotions. Modern strategy for any company is very similar to the principles I described above. The success of a company’s strategy is driven by how clear is the “flow” and how effectively can “contrasts” in resources be used to accomplish the path set out as a part of the strategy.

Most business schools would like to call this flow a “Value Proposition” for the business. Similar to any individual with a specific skill set, being able to clearly define in a short frame of time, called elevator pitch by the Venture Capitalists (called Vulture Capitalists by some), how a business offers something unique is the big question everyone is after. If you want to start defining your strategy, make sure you know your elevator pitch well!

Once that’s done, the next pit stop is to use the contrasts in human perspectives to help achieve your goals. Being able to prioritize what needs to be done and to identify the skills needed in your next hires is what set asides leaders from entrepreneurs.

Those who know how to do this well will be the ones who will be able to envision, formulate and execute on a business strategy successfully. To recap, if you want to run a business, be sure to do two things well:

  1. Know your businesses’ “flow” aka. elevator pitch
  2. Know how to how to hire the right people and use human “contrasts” to your advantage
